Overview

Red Red Botak Head Restaurant, tucked away on the sixth floor of The Gardens Mall’s rooftop inside Bookxcess, offers a unique dining experience that blends a cozy literary atmosphere with bold, flavorful dishes. This hidden gem in Mid Valley City is perfect for those seeking both comfort and culinary adventure, whether you’re a casual diner or a food enthusiast eager to explore creative Malaysian and fusion flavors in an intimate setting.

The space itself is inviting, calm, and thoughtfully arranged amid bookshelves, creating a relaxed vibe that encourages savoring each dish in peace. The service reflects this warmth, with friendly staff and Chef Liang making the experience personal and engaging. It’s clear they take pride in crafting dishes that are both visually appealing and rich in taste.

Signature dishes highlight a harmonious balance of traditional and innovative flavors. The Spiced Buttermilk Fried Chicken consistently receives praise for its crispy exterior and juicy, tender meat, often cited as a top contender in Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant fried chicken scene. Meanwhile, the Carbonara Masak Lemak and Green Curry Pasta featuring soft shell crab showcase inventive mashups that marry creamy, aromatic elements with classic Italian pasta textures. The pulled lamb masak hitam with fragrant smoked biryani rice delivers comforting layers of spice, though occasionally the seasoning tips toward saltiness, indicating the chef’s bold flavor profile.

Other notable offerings include the Tuna with Rice and Chicken Kuzi, reflecting a thoughtful mix of Middle Eastern and local influences. Desserts like the Britney Sphere, a luscious fusion of fruit and cream encased in chocolate, and the rich CCF Lasagna provide an indulgent close to the meal.

Overall, Red Red Botak Head excels in delivering a multi-dimensional dining journey. It suits diners who appreciate nuanced flavors and a quiet retreat from the usual mall hustle. The combination of an unexpected location, imaginative menu, and attentive hospitality makes it a standout destination for those craving both culinary discovery and a serene meal in Kuala Lumpur. Whether stopping for a quick unagi laksa or lingering over a set meal with expertly paired drinks and desserts, visitors will find a thoughtfully curated experience awaiting them.

Great hidden spot on the top of Gardens mall. We chose the set, order a pasta, rice and fried chicken and get drink and dessert for free. Opted for Lemak Kaw Hijau, green curry pasta with soft shell crab, which was aromatic and delicious. The fried chicken is definitely top 3 in KL, crispy, well seasoned&marinated, juicy on the inside, the star of the meal. The Ayam Masak Lemak with smoked briyani was fragrant and tasty but a little salty. On recommendation of Chef Liang himself, we got the Britney Sphere for dessert. Sweet and sticky blend of fruits, cream and maybe dulce de leche inside a chocolate shell. Overall great meal. The set came to rm128 for two, could feed three.

I really enjoyed the cozy and comfortable atmosphere here. Service is great and Chef Liang is always a joy to talk to. I ordered the unagi laksa. It came out quickly, in about 6 minutes. The broth is a bit sweeter for my tastes but overall, the dish is good and I finished everything. I will certainly be coming back to try other dishes while enjoying the service and atmosphere.

Need to go up from Isetan side lift. Food was excellent. The fried chicken was superb. Crunchy and not dry. The pink sauce was great!. Paired well with the chicken. Do not mix with chilli sauce as the chilli will overpower the pink sauce. Service was excellent. atmosphere quiet and chill.

20250521 Firstly, did not know there was a sixth floor at Gardens Mall and did not know there was a bookstore, Bookxcess to be precise. I did know once upon a time there was a Borders and a lonely cafe called Starbucks in Gardens but long gone. To find a restaurant in Bookxcess is even more interesting, a cozy place hidden on the 6th floor among books greeted by the friendly staffs and Chef Liang himself. A shame that we had only had this round, will try the food the next time…the drinks were unique and delicious. 20250616 back for a proper meal, we took the package option and chose the pulled lamb masak hitam with smoked rice. The biryani rice was fragrant but the pulled lamb was a bit salty. Next was Ebony & ivory…the overall dish taste was nice just the angel hair was not al dante, a bit soggy for my liking. We also opted spiced buttermilk ayam merah. Marinated and cooked well, I was amazed that the breast was cooked so tender and moist…yums..for drinks we got a jug of chamillionaire again..refreshing…and we got a chocolate tart of a cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Overall another nice dining experience. Both Chef Liang and staffs were attentive and friendly yet again

This restaurant serves up authentic Bukhari rice, just like how it’s traditionally made. The rice is fluffy, fragrant, and perfectly spiced. It is not too heavy, yet full of flavour. The chicken? Tender, juicy, and beautifully marinated. Every bite feels like comfort food with a delightful Middle Eastern twist. Definitely a dish I’d come back for again and again!

The restaurant is located inside the book store, as they are sharing the same building. Just follow the sign to the book store and you will see the restaurant sign. Comfortable restaurant environment with spacious seating environment. Surrounded by the book shelves on one side gives a unique sense, while the glass windows on the other side gives a peak to the building skyline outside. Food serves are some of the in house fusion recipes, in which providing some unique taste not often found outside.

Finding this restaurant feels like a scene from Maze Runner — you basically have to locate BookXcess at The Gardens Mall rooftop, then make your way through the bookstore to get there. We tried their set meal, which includes pasta, rice, 3 pieces of chicken, a drink, and a dessert. My friend had the “staff meal” and thought it was above average. I went for the soyu rice with chicken — the chicken was quite nice, though the 3 pieces of fried chicken were slightly over-fried, giving me KFC flashbacks. It came with chili sauce and a pink sauce — surprisingly, the pink one was better. For dessert, we had the peanut butter banana cake. The peanut butter flavor was spot on, though the cake itself was a little dry (probably baked earlier in the day) — still enjoyable. The included drink was “Camomilonaire” — chamomile tea with a yuzu twist — and we loved it. The atmosphere is a treat in itself, as the restaurant sits inside BookXcess with big window views. It’s truly a hidden gem with fusion-style food and a Malaysian twist. The owner (definitely botak ) is super friendly, and I’ll definitely be back to try more from the menu.
